The Road: Visual Reference – Spurn #2

As part of my work on illustrating The Road I have being around nearby locales taking pictures of worn, ruined and abandoned areas. The good thing about living in an northern industrial city that has largely being forgotten for the past 50 years is that there is a wealth of rusting and tired looking structures that could fit right into a post-apocalyptic setting.

The following pictures are from Spurn Point for use as reference for the final parts of the novel, should I need it. Not only is there a desolate feeling beach strewn with debris since the tide wash over the spit but there are also a number of abandoned wartime structures being torn down which are perfect reference for buildings in the story. Seeing the effects of weathering is excellent for kick-starting the imagination and coming up with settings that have been abandoned for a decade or more.
