Comic Research: Industry Methods

This video has given me a wonderful insight into the process that an actual professional comic book artist would undertake when it comes to colouring a page. The method utilised here is one used by DC and Marvel artists that involves using a brush with an airbrush setting and blending modes to create shadow and highlights. This is really interesting to see how the flatting method helps the colourist to speed up their process and is something I could really benefit from getting my head around.

Following the previous video I decided to learn how the ‘flatting’ process works. There are undoubtedly quicker ways to colour images but as I’m wanting to use this project to get a feel for professional practice within the comic industry I have aimed to work as systematically as possible, using approved methods. The process of flatting an image also makes it easier to experiment with colours by making each colour selectble and quickly editable.
